The RAAEY and Water Services

Ensuring the quality and efficiency of water service provision is a major priority of the state.

The Energy, Waste and Water Regulatory Authority (Water Sector) is responsible for the control, supervision and regulation of issues, related to the provision of water services.

The 6th goal

In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly, with 190 leaders representing almost all of humanity present, made a historic decision that will affect the lives of millions of people: the adoption of 17 Goals, known as the “Sustainable Development Goals”, which express contemporary global challenges, in an effort to ensure that all countries respond effectively to global problems. The 6th goal concerns water and the aim is to ensure universal and equitable access to drinking water and sanitation facilities by 2030.

Demand for water

Water supply

Domestic consumption, industrial, tourism, etc. In Greece, the demand in these categories is around 20% of the total volume of water available.

Irrigation

Agriculture & livestock farming 80% of the total water resources available for extraction.

The water division of the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Waste and Water (RAEWW) in Greece

plays a critical role in the provision of water services (for water supply, irrigation, sewerage purposes).

These must comply with a set of principles that include:

Universal Access:
The provision of the services must be available to all consumers.
High standards of quality:
Services must protect public health and the environment.
Rational pricing:
The cost of services must be within limits that secures access for all social groups.

The water supply and sewerage division is of crucial importance to the day-to-day living and well-being of societies. It is responsible for ensuring the ongoing supply of clean water and removal of waste, protecting public health as well as the environment.

Water supply

Water supply includes the provision of drinking water to populations, in both urban and rural areas, as well as to economic and commercial activities.

Sewerage / Wastewater disposal

Sewerage refers to the collection, treatment and disposal of waste in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WTPs).

Irrigation

The irrigation sector includes the supply of water for agricultural and livestock rearing purposes.

The Main Water Sources

Water resources are the total amount of water available in a country that can be used to meet its water needs, and they can be divided into two basic categories:

Surface Water Resources

They are located on the
surface of the earth
(rivers, lakes, reservoirs)

Ground Water Resources

Found beneath the Earth’s
surface (in aquifers, springs)

Drinking Water

In its natural state, water is rarely of a quality suitable for human consumption. Ensuring the required quality for drinking water depends not only on the specific stages of processing, but also on maintaining proper conditions throughout the distribution and supply systems.

Societies everywhere around the world need safe and adequate supplies of drinking water, whether in urban centres, rural areas, or island communities.

Water plays a vital role in people’s lives, across all sectors from health to the economy. Maintaining and supporting good water quality protects not only public health, but the future of our water resources in general.

From ancient times to the present day, irrigation has evolved using different methods and technologies, adapting to the needs of each era and regional conditions.
Irrigation water is essential for both agriculture and livestock farming, supporting crop cultivation as well as animal husbandry.

Modern Irrigation Methods

There are different irrigation methods with varying technical and economic characteristics.
More efficient irrigation practices can be adopted to reduce the amount of water used in agriculture, such as drip irrigation, or the use of precision technologies to adjust the volume of water supplied to match the specific needs of the plants.

Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Introducing more sustainable agricultural practices, such as crop rotation, soil management and the use of appropriate seeds can also help reduce the amount of water used in farming.

Water Service Providers

Water service providers are the organisations that provide water for water supply and irrigation systems. They are defined in accordance with Law 5037/2023.

Managerial Adequacy

Managerial Adequacy within the water sector constitutes a critical factor in ensuring the sustainable governance of water resources. Consequently, effective water management can contribute to protection of the environment and to ensuring adequate water resources for future generations.

Managerial Adequacy is a reflection of the ability of providers to manage the natural resource and offer reliable services to consumers. It includes technical, operational, financial and qualitative data (e.g. age of networks, personnel, water quality).
